During First Aid training, we often see that standard first aid kits are placed at the work location. But does such a suitcase contain everything you need in an emergency?
More difficult situations
For most first aid situations, the standard case is sufficiently equipped, but what if there is a victim with an arterial hemorrhage, an abdominal wound or a burn? Then the standard first aid kit quickly falls short. The more complicated the access to the workplace, the more difficult it becomes for emergency services to get to the scene. This significantly increases the risk of a fatal outcome with these types of injuries. A trauma kit increases the chance of survival. This kit includes a tourniquet, trauma dressing, Woundclot hemostatic gauze, Burnshield gauze and a number of sterile gauzes, which can provide a temporary solution for a large part of the injuries.
What does the trainer think?
“I believe that you don't have to take a complete suitcase with you to your workplace. But a number of essential resources, such as Woundclot for minor and major bleeding and Burnshield for burns in a small kit, ensure that you are prepared for the most common. The kit is small and light, so it's easy to carry.”, says Renier Kampman. “Obviously, the contents of the kit will have to be tested against the risk inventory and the company emergency plan”.
