We are regularly asked by students whether they can also attach their fall protection to their backs. At SafetyPro, we teach students to attach their fall protection to their chest point, because after a fall at this point, the chance of self-reliance is greater.
The answer
Out of habit, many people attach their lanyards to the back of their harness. Based on the idea that this is easier during the execution of the work. Just keep in mind that there are risks that you need to be aware of. For example, the lines often run under the arms, so that after a fall the victim ends up with his armpits on his lines. This can cause damage to the shoulder, severely affecting self-reliance. After a fall, the victim is also pulled towards his anchor point and therefore often the construction, which may result in head trauma and unconsciousness. If the victim is already in possession of suspension straps against the suspension trauma, these are no longer usable and a life-threatening situation is lurking.
The same can also occur when always using the chest point, because you will find that your harness hangs much more comfortably after a fall in the chest point. If you are performing grinding work, those lines near your work are far from safe. They can be caught by your tool or even struck through, the sharps can damage your lines. How safe is your situation then?
The most important thing is to know the consequences of your choices. During our training courses, ample attention is paid to the options that are available and the possible consequences for your safety.
